Bed frames, 46 of them

A frame is the part of a bed nobody photographs and everybody feels

Mattresses get the attention. The frame decides whether the bed creaks at two in the morning, whether the room keeps its floor, and whether the phone charges without a cable across the carpet. That is the part we make.

The workshop

How FLUEST ended up making bed frames

FLUEST began with a bed that creaked. Not dramatically, just enough that one person turning over woke the other, and the noise came from a joint the size of a thumbnail where two pieces of steel met without anything holding them still. Tightening it helped for a week. The second time it came loose we took the whole frame apart to see how it had been put together, and the answer was: cheaply, in the places nobody looks.

A bed frame is judged at two in the morning, not in a photograph.

So the first thing we built was a joint. Then the frame around it. A bed frame is not complicated, and that is exactly why it is easy to make badly: there are perhaps a dozen decisions in one, and each of them can be made for two dollars less. We made ours the other way round and then slept on them, which is the only test that finds the joint that works loose on the four hundredth night rather than the fourth.

Powder coating rather than paint: a chip in a bedroom becomes a rust spot within a year.

The range grew from complaints rather than from a plan. A headboard that was only decoration became a headboard with a shelf, because that is where a book and a glass of water actually go. The shelf grew a socket, because the alternative is a cable draped across the floor to the only outlet in the room. Under the bed, which in most bedrooms is the largest unused space in the house, we put drawers on runners that still work when the room is not perfectly level.

Everything is built around one number that nobody advertises: the clearance under the frame. Too low and the space is useless. Too high and the bed dominates the room and the mattress sits where you have to climb onto it. The frames here are built to the heights that leave a usable space underneath and still let a person sit on the edge with their feet flat on the floor.

We work in batches. Steel is cut, welded and then powder coated, and the coating matters more in a bedroom than it sounds: a bed gets knocked by a vacuum cleaner every week for years, and a scratch that goes through to bare metal is a rust mark by the following winter. Slats are spaced to hold a mattress without a box spring, and the spacing is settled by loading a frame rather than by arithmetic. Upholstered headboards are cut, filled and stitched, then checked by hand along the seam that takes the weight when somebody leans back to read.

Clearance is the number nobody advertises and everybody lives with.

What we do not do is describe a bed as an experience. A frame holds a mattress, stays quiet, gives back the floor underneath, and does not need attention for years. When it does all four, nobody thinks about it again, which is the highest compliment furniture gets.

Choosing

How this compares with the alternatives

Most people choosing a bed frame are choosing between four things rather than four brands. This is how they differ on the properties that can be checked rather than argued about.

Compared on properties a buyer can verify before ordering. Nothing here is a claim about another brand's quality.

Before you order

Four numbers worth having on paper

Room width

Measure wall to wall at floor level, then subtract the space you want to walk in. A bed that fits the wall does not always fit the room.

Doorway and turn

The headboard is the widest single piece in the box. Measure the narrowest turn on the way to the bedroom, not the door itself.

Clearance you need

Stated for 4 frames here, from 5 to 14 inches.

Weight it carries

Capacity is stated for 16 frames, up to 1000 lb.

Materials

What the frames are made of

Material is what decides how a frame ages, so it is stated on every page where the brand states it. Here is what each one is good at and where it gives up.

Steel

The support system, the legs and the joints. Steel takes the load and keeps its shape, and a welded steel frame is the reason a bed stays quiet. It is heavier to move and it rusts where the coating is broken, so the coating matters as much as the metal.

Powder coating

Baked onto the steel rather than brushed on. It survives knocks, cleaning and being carried through a doorway. Paint on a bed frame is a false economy, and the difference shows up as chips along the bottom rail.

Engineered wood slats

Spaced to support a mattress without a box spring. Slats spread the load and let the mattress breathe. They are consumable: a broken slat is a five minute fix, and it is worth checking they can be replaced individually.

Fabric and leatherette

Over the headboard, where a hard surface would be uncomfortable to lean against and would knock against the wall. Fabric hides marks better than leatherette and holds dust more; leatherette wipes clean and creases with age.

ABS and PC in the charging module

The housing around the socket. It is chosen for heat rather than for looks, because the part that sits closest to a bed and works overnight is the part that has to stay cool.

How a frame is made

Steel is cut to length and welded into the support system first, because everything else hangs off it. The welds sit where the load goes, not where they are easiest to reach, and the frame is squared before it is coated rather than after.

Powder coating goes on next. It is baked rather than brushed, and that is what carries it through a vacuum cleaner and a move between flats. Painted frames look identical in a photograph and stop looking identical after the first move.

Slats are spaced for a mattress without a box spring and loaded before they leave the batch. Upholstery is cut, filled and stitched over the headboard, and the seam that takes a person leaning back is the one we check by hand.

The charging module is fitted last and tested with a real phone rather than a meter, because a socket that reads correctly and charges slowly is a complaint waiting to happen. Then the frame is assembled once, in full, and taken apart again for packing.

Questions

Direct answers

Does a FLUEST frame need a box spring?

No. The slats are spaced to carry a mattress directly, and the pages say so where the brand states it. A box spring on top of a slatted frame only raises the bed.

Why do metal frames creak, and do these?

Creaking comes from movement in a joint, not from the metal. Frames that are welded where the load goes and bolted where they are not stay quiet; the ones that squeak are the ones assembled entirely from bolts.

How much fits under the bed?

It depends on the clearance, which is stated where the brand states it. Measure the boxes you already own before ordering rather than the space you imagine.

What does the charging station power?

Phones, tablets and a bedside lamp through the socket where the frame has one. It replaces the cable running across the floor, and it is not a substitute for a wall socket.

How long does assembly take?

An evening for two people, with the tools in the box. The heaviest part is the headboard, which is the reason it is a two person job rather than a one person one.

A frame I looked at last week is gone. Why?

Its price stopped being buyable, so the page came down instead of standing there with a figure nobody could honour. The next update puts it back the moment there is a price again.

How this is kept honest

How this catalogue is kept honest

One date for the whole catalogue

Prices are updated together, on a schedule, and the date lives on a single page rather than being repeated on every card.

Specifications come from the frame

Sizes, materials, capacities and clearances are published as the brand states them. A missing figure is left out.

No stars we did not collect

There are no ratings and no customer quotes on this site yet. A bedroom purchase is exactly where a fabricated five stars would do the most damage, so the space stays empty until there is something real to put in it.

Sources are read

The guides quote public health and safety authorities. Each source was read on the date printed beside it and the quotations are word for word.
